What Is Clean Beauty? Why It Matters for Aging and Grey Hair

Clean Beauty Means Your Best Health and Your Best Hair

Clean beauty might seem like the newest beauty industry buzzword but that doesn’t mean you can afford to ignore it. Behind all the hype is a simple idea – clean beauty means skin and haircare free from chemicals that are bad for you and the planet. This is especially important for aging and grey hair which is more vulnerable to harsh ingredients.

Arey’s commitment to clean beauty means haircare that delivers you balanced, safe, effective results. As a Trichologist trained in haircare best practices, I’m all about clean ingredients that deliver the best care for all types of hair at all ages. That’s why all Arey products follow the Credo Clean Beauty Standards

Clean beauty is a hot topic with millions of hashtag views on Instagram and TikTok, here’s what you need to know when it comes to choosing clean haircare:

Clean Beauty Doesn’t Mean Compromising on Results

If you’re wondering whether clean beauty is less effective, you’re not alone. Back when clean beauty started in the 1980s, it wasn’t considered serious skincare. Decades of research later, clean beauty has a wide range of powerful science-backed ingredients to draw from.

Choosing a reputable clean beauty and haircare brand like Arey has a double benefit – you avoid potentially hazardous chemicals and you benefit from clinically efficacious ingredients that are good for you and the environment.

Why Should You Care About Clean Beauty?

Clean beauty and clean haircare are not only about the ingredients they use – it’s also about the chemicals they leave out. Think about this – there are only 11 cosmetic ingredients banned by the FDA1 compared to over 1,300 in Europe.2 “In the US it’s really a buyer beware situation,” says Janet Nudelman, director of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. “Cosmetics companies can use any raw material that they like and there’s no way to know if they are safe before they reach the shelves. The contrast with the EU is stark and troubling.”

As a US consumer, it makes sense for you to choose beauty and haircare brands that screen out potentially harmful (but legal) ingredients that can irritate your skin and may include known carcinogens and endocrine disrupters. At Arey, we do the research so you don’t have to.

Your Skin Is Your Body’s Largest Organ and It Deserves the Best

Here’s what I tell my Trichology clients – haircare products need to be clean because they spend a long time on your scalp skin. Your scalp skin absorbs many of the ingredients in your haircare and that’s a good thing if you’re using clean products. It’s not so great if your haircare is packed with potential irritants.

These are some of the most common scalp skin irritants found in haircare:

  • Sulfates: harsh cleansers that can dry out your scalp and hair. Look for a clean balanced sulfate-free shampoo like Wash.

  • Parabens: also called butylparaben, ethylparaben, and methylparaben, these preservatives can disrupt hormones and irritate your skin.

  • Synthetic fragrance: if you see this listed on a product, avoid it. Look for products that are fragrance-free or use 100% natural fragrance.

  • Hair color chemicals: hair color needs chemicals (developer) to let the dye penetrate the hair shaft. These can irritate your scalp skin and dry out your hair.

Arey clean haircare products are always free from harmful ingredients like phthalates, parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrances and formaldehyde. They are also always gluten-free, cruelty-free and vegan.

We all tend to take our scalp skin for granted until there’s a problem. If you’re like most people, it can take an episode of dryness, itching, dandruff or hair loss for your scalp to get your full attention.

Clean Protection for Your Scalp When Using Hair Dye

Whether you choose to cover or embrace your grey hair, there are clean solutions available. One of the main sources of scalp irritation is using hair color. You can protect your scalp skin with Calm It Down™ or use a natural alternative to reversing your grey hair with Arey’s The System.

Calm It Down™ can be used before using hair dye to protect your scalp. You can also use it after coloring your hair until your scalp is no longer itchy or irritated.  Calm It Down contains our Mela-9™ Complex so it also helps boost pigment production in your hair follicles for less new grey hair growth.
