Why Skinification Is the New Haircare and Why That’s Important

What Is the Skinification of Haircare Trend?

What is skinification? As a haircare professional, it’s a word I use with fellow stylists and Trichologists but one that often confuses my salon clients. Here’s how I explain it: skinification is a marketing buzzword that describes how haircare is becoming more like skincare.

As a Trichologist I know your hair health is intimately connected with the health of your scalp skin. That’s why I believe haircare and skincare should always go hand in hand. When I co-founded Arey with my client Allison Conrad, we designed our products around science-backed ingredients that nourish both your hair and your scalp skin.

How Can Skinification Boost Your Haircare Routine?

Skinification is a holistic whole-body approach that focuses on clinically efficacious ingredients. In other words, you can boost your haircare routine by treating your hair as well as you treat your face. And, the best part? It doesn’t have to be hard work.

In one study of 2100 consumers, 56% stated that active ingredients are more important than brand names when it comes to purchasing decisions.I like this statistic because I know ingredients really matter in haircare. That’s because your scalp skin is great at absorbing ingredients. But, it is also easily unbalanced and damaged by the wrong ingredients.

Here are two key things to look for when choosing haircare:

What ingredients ARE being used: look for trichologist-driven, clean, gentle formulations with proven active skincare ingredients including exfoliants like salicylic and lactic acids, peptides, antioxidants, and hydrating fatty acids (like sesame seed oil).

What ingredients ARE NOT being used: only use clean-certified products free from common scalp irritants like artificial colors, sulfates, phthalates, artificial fragrances, gluten, and formaldehyde.

You can read more here about the ingredients to avoid in haircare.

Trichology-Driven Scalp Care to Try Right Now:

Trichology is the science of hair care. As a Trichologist, I study the structure, function, and health of your hair and scalp. All Arey products are clean and Trichology-driven for a holistic approach to your best hair that starts with your scalp health. Here are my recommendations for taking the best care of your scalp health.

Trichologist Tip 1 – Use a Scalp Exfoliant

Whether your hair is straight, fine, curly, or coily, a healthy scalp means healthier hair. A gentle scalp exfoliant like Scrub helps clear buildup, dead skin, and oil from your scalp that can cause itching and even dandruff.

Read more about using Scrub to give your scalp a detox massage.

Arey Scrub is packed with these hero skincare ingredients:

Exfoliants: skincare ingredients including Salicylic acid, Lactic Acid, and Glycolic Acid work to gently remove product buildup and dead skin cells from your scalp.

Antioxidants: including caffeine. The humble coffee bean is used widely in skincare because it is so effective at penetrating the skin barrier.2 It also has antioxidant properties that protect your skin cells from aging and even ultraviolet radiation (sun damage).

Moisturizers: including Sesamum indicum seed oil/Sesamum indicum seed extract. Sesame’s high concentration of fatty acids helps to hydrate and protect your scalp’s natural barrier. It is also easily absorbed by the skin, making it a popular skincare ingredient.3

Trichologist Tip 2 – Feed Your Scalp With a Serum

Now your scalp is scrubbed clean and exfoliated, your hair follicles are openand able to absorb all the skin and haircare ingredients in a targeted supplement like Arey To The Root

Arey’s topical supplement To The Root delivers these proven scalp care ingredients to your roots:

Soothing antioxidants: including Zanthoxylum Bungeanum Fruit Extract - Zanthoxylum Bungeanum Fruit Extract can condition the skin and hair, inhibit scalp fungus (a cause of dandruff), and prevent hair loss.5

Growth-boosting ingredients: Wasabia Japonica Leaf Extract stimulates the scalp and hair growth.6 It is a trend in Japan to apply freshly grated Wasabi stem to your hair as a hair growth treatment.7

To The Root™ also contains Arey’s Mela-9™ Complex which helps proactively slow, delay, and even reverse grey hair. Because it’s oil and fragrance-free, it’s gentle enough to use on your face. I also recommend To The Root to my clients who want to see fewer grey hairs in their beards. For quicker grey-hair-busting results I recommend combining To The Root with our nutritional supplement Not Today, Grey.

Trichologist Tip 3 – Nourish Your Scalp With a Supplement

Because great skin and healthy hair start from the inside, your diet and lifestyle are as important as your skincare and haircare routine. I get it, aging, hormone changes, or just a busy lifestyle can make it hard to get all the nutrition you need from diet alone.

Not Today, Grey boosts your hair and scalp health holistically with:

Vitamins: B vitamins,8 Vitamin Dand iron10 boost your hair’s pigment production, growth, and volume.

Minerals: calcium and copper improve your immune system, combat dry hair, and encourage hair growth.11

Phytonutrients: black sesame is an important source of phytonutrients12 that promote stronger hair and increase pigment production.

Your hair grows around half an inch a month so you should notice your new healthy hair about three months after the skinification of your haircare routine. Your scalp health should improve even faster.

Skinification Is a Clean, Holistic Approach to Haircare

The skinification of haircare invites you to take a holistic (whole-body) view of your hair health. Bad hair days don't happen in isolation – when I help clients with hair issues, they often have scalp issues as well. Skinification as a trend is a reminder to use clean, balanced, haircare that is kind to your scalp, your hair and your overall health.

At Arey we care about your hair health which is why our products are always clean and free from harsh cleansers or additives.

We want you to reach your hair goals so we always offer a 25% discount on all auto replenish orders. We believe that science + consistency = results.
